A delegation from the Nevada Subcontractors Association met with Mayor John Lee at North Las Vegas City Hall on January 22, 2014. At the Mayor’s invitation, also joining in the discussion were building officials Greg Blackburn of the City of North Las Vegas and Chris Knight of the City of Las Vegas.
Outreach between local governments and the construction industry creates the community interaction necessary to promote economic vitality for both the City and the industry.
“The NSA recognizes that responsibility for improving the permitting process needs to be shared by the construction industry and local government,” noted NSA President Scott Donnelly. “Keeping the process moving efficiently is as important for the City as it is for the construction industry. Under the new systems put into place, approval time has been dramatically reduced and we have seen improvements in approval and pass rates for both plan checks and inspections.”
The meeting included updates from the Mayor and Building Officials on new procedures put into place, as well as goals of new processes to be implemented. While highlighting the resources of their departments, local government is keenly aware that standardized procedures and a streamlined permitting process will go a long way in promoting a business-friendly atmosphere. Discussions between jurisdictions focus on creating systems that save businesses time and money, a much welcomed positive environment for our small business owners to grow and create jobs.
“A collaboration regionally to discuss permits, inspections, and plan approval is forward thinking in providing a more efficient permitting and inspection process,” cited NSA Executive Director Cindy Creighton. “Both the City of Las Vegas and the City of North Las Vegas have made impressive reforms in standardizing procedures that streamline the process in multiple ways.”
